Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Sensory Deprivation Tanks in Arizona, but Were Afraid to Ask.

AZ Float tank | Float Spa in ArizonaMany people are skeptical of what floating in a lightless and silent tank filled with water and epsom salt can do for you. The truth however is just oe hour floating can do a lot! Float sessions at Vibetality are part therapy, part meditation, part transcendence, and a whole lot of relaxation.

The Vibetality sensory deprivation tank is a temperature-regulated, salt-water filled, soundproof, lightproof tank filled with 11 inches of water, that you can effortless float inside of. The tank is used as a tool to free your body and mind from the numerous forms of sensory input you are constantly receiving.

In 1954 John C. Lilly an accredited neuroscientist began studying what would happen if the mind was deprived external stimulus. Lilly was a pioneer in the field of electronic brain stimulation, and was the first person to map the pleasure and pain pathways in the brain. Lilly's original hypothesis was that the brain needed external stimulus, and without it, would slip into a coma like state. In Lilly's original tank, subjects were submerged in 160 gallons of water and wore a scary looking mask, that provided air and blocked out external light. The water temperature was kept at about 94 degrees the same temperature as your skin to help minimize physical sensations. Lilly's original tank had a major flaw though, the masks. It turns out having something wrapped around your head creates a pretty significant physical distraction. Lilly's ingenious solution to this problem was saturating water with enough epsom salt to raise the density of the water, and change the water's specific gravity enough to make the human body buoyant. This resulted in a solution were participates could float effortlessly and the mask was no longer needed.

Lilly's epsom salt solution turned out to be the break though float therapy needed. With the body not working to fight against gravity's push, muscles and joints, are able to relax and take a break. While your body is not fighting gravity it also has extra resources which it can use for healing and recovering. Without the constant push of gravity, your spine lengthens, chronic pain can be relieved, and muscles and ligaments get to rest and recover. Because the tanks water solution doesn't create pressure points on your body your blood is able to flow freely all throughout your body while you lay back and relax.

Once you step inside the the Vibetality Float Tank there is no light, sound or physical sensations that can distract you. This sensory reduction correlates with increases in theta waves in the brain. Theta waves range between 4-7 HZ, and slow brain activity to near the point of sleep. Theta brain waves have been associated with inspiration, heightened receptivity, and dreamlike imagery.

The water inside the Vibetality isolation tank is delightfully dense due to the high salt content, which makes you effortlessly buoyant. You absolutely cannot sink in the tank, and if you tried to hold your arms under water, you'd struggle. The mental and physical stillness you can achieve inside the float tank is incredibly euphoric.

Because the temperature of the water is the same temperature of your skin you don't even feel it, you get a true feeling of floating. This floating feeling gives you a sense of weightlessness and releases your body into relaxation. It can feel like you can just "rest away from everything”

This feeling of release is a great way to overcome and deal with stress and pain. Sven-Åke Bood from Karlstad University has come to the scientific "conclusion that flotation tank therapy is an effective and non-invasive method for the treatment of stress-related pain"

Floatation REST therapy is being studied and used to treat:

Chronic tension headaches

Muscle tension pain

Improving human performance

Fibromyalgia

Stress

Improving memory

Going further into the meta data according to – Esquire Magazine "St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton, Wisconsin did a year-long statistical analysis of the effects of float tanks that revealed a 70%-85% improvement in treatment of a wide range of problems, from anxiety, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular ailments, migraine/ tension headaches, chronic pain, hypertension, and recovery from cardiac surgery."

The benefits of Float tanks are really undeniable, so why don't more people use them? Usually the answer to that question is they are scared. Scared of the tank, or scared of being alone. The most common question is about claustrophobia.

Will I feel claustrophobic?
The thought of being alone in a completely dark space can be unnerving to some. However the darkness you experience inside the is float tank is very similar to what you experience when you close your eyes. Just like when you close your eyes in your bedroom, the darkness does not create a confined or restricted feeling, it just stops visual sensory information. Inside the Vibetality isolation tank many people actually experience a feeling of vast and unlimited space. The Vibetality Float Tank is very large, 9 feet long and 5 feet wide. It does not feel cramped whatsoever once you lay down inside.

Is there any risk of drowning?
The high density of the tank solution makes it impossible for to go beneath the water surface. The water level of 11 inches makes it very possible to touch the bottom of the tank without concern.

What if I fall asleep?
Lots of people actually do fall asleep in the flotation tank. The deep state of relaxation can often times encourage sleep, this is quite normal.
